CG-FS-220-H1

Chain Guard® Food Grade 220 H1 (CG-FS-220-H1) is a high temperature, ester based synthetic chain oil fortified with anti-wear additives and oxidant inhibitors that optimize the performance and stability of the lubricant.

This ester based product can be used in place of black natural boron nitride graphite on food and bakery oven chains operating below 600°F.  The natural detergency of Chain Guard Food Grade 220 H1 minimizes carbon sludge and buildup on chains contributed by conventional PAO’s, mineral, and vegetable based lubricants when exposed to higher temperature oven environments. In some cases, when applying over top of black graphite lubricant, CG-FS-220-H1 has been known to actually clean the chain of graphite buildup.

CG-FS-220-H1 can be used in extreme high temperature bakery oven applications and has a high flash point and a recommended operating temperature range of -25°C to 315°C (-13°F – 599°F).

Suitable for use in industrial bakeries, this lubricant will pass BRC and OSHA safety audits.  It is an NSF H1 food grade registered product that meets all regulations set out by the FDA (21 CFR 178.3750) and is approved for incidental contact with food in and around food processing areas.  In addition, CG-FS-220-H1 is CFIA registered and approved for use in food processing facilities in Canada.

Q:
When the oil stays in a catch pan over a burner it is becoming a paste similar to glue we don't know if these remainings have the potential to start a fire since the original flash point is around 600 F

A:

When lubricant remains in a catch pan or collects inside an oven chamber, especially near a burner or high heat surface, it can thicken, oxidize, and collect contaminants over time. Under sustained heat, lighter components of the lubricant can cook off and leave behind a thicker paste, varnish like residue, or carbonized material.

The flash point of the original fluid is based on fresh oil under controlled test conditions. Once the lubricant has been exposed to heat, air, food residue, carbon, dust, and other process contaminants, the remaining material should not be treated the same as fresh lubricant.

For this reason, oil, residue, or paste like material should not be allowed to collect and remain inside the oven chamber, especially near a burner, open flame, or high heat surface. Any collected lubricant or process residue should be removed as part of a frequent oven housekeeping and preventive maintenance program.

Recommended steps:

  • Clean the catch pan and surrounding area frequently, and do not allow residue to build up.
  • Confirm the actual temperature in and around the catch pan, burner area, and any surface where oil or residue may collect, since these areas may be exposed to different heat conditions than the chain itself.
  • Avoid allowing lubricant to drip, pool, or remain inside the oven chamber, especially over or near a burner or open flame area.
  • Review whether the current lubrication rate is too high, since excess oil may be ending up in the pan.
  • If possible, reposition, shield, or redirect the catch pan so collected oil is not continuously exposed to burner heat, or drain the collected oil to a safer location away from direct heat.

CG-FS-220-H1 is designed as a high temperature synthetic food grade chain lubricant and is suitable for oven chain applications up to approximately 600°F. That said, no lubricant or residue should be allowed to continuously collect and cook inside the oven chamber. The safest approach is to treat accumulated oil or paste like residue as combustible process waste, remove it frequently, and make this part of a standard oven housekeeping, maintenance, and safety program.

Q:
In an oven that is part of a Corn Tostada line (corn chips), and that works 24 hours from Monday to Saturday, what is the application frequency of CG-FS-220-H1?

Hello,

In reference to your question regarding frequency of application, there are many variables to consider.

Here is a great article on our website regarding frequency of lubricnat application.    https://www.chainguard.com/blog/how-often-should-i-lubricate-my-bakery-oven-chain

Can you please tell us a little more about the application?

Here are some items to consider:
  • Type of oven
  • Type of chain system
  • Bake Temperature
  • Chain Temperature at point and time of lubrication?
  • Chain Temperature during bake process?
  • How is lubricant currently applied?  Manually or Automatic.
Answers to the above will ensure we provide you the correct lubricant for the application.

Q:
We opened a new bakery in May. We purchased an Empire revolving tray oven. The installers gave us a bottle of Chain Guard. We need to order more. It looks as if you cannot purchase anything less than 5 gallons?

Currently, the smallest size available is a 5 US gallon pail.  Please keep in mind that Chain Guard Oven Chain 220 is synthetic with an indefinite shelf life.  Although some clients have kept it longer, we suggest it has a shelf life of 3 years, and given your use case is a revolving tray deck oven, we suggest a lubrication schedule that is frequent enough that will consume this product quicker than 3 years.

Q:
so my question is is this safe to have direct contact with the product as in a whole belt and chain or is this just for drive style chains and try not to have it come in direct contact

A:
CG-FS-220-H1 is NSF H1 registered as a Food Grade.  H1 products are considered the safest food-grade lubricating products and can be used on equipment where incidental contact may occur.  Suitable for applications and use of up to 600ºF, this high-temperature chain lubricant is designed for the drive chain itself and is NOT to be used as a release agent on the oven plates or belt slates.
